published on 20 March

The International World Games Association (IWGA) expresses its deepest condolences to the global cheerleading community following the passing of Jeff Webb, founder and President of the International Cheer Union (ICU).

Jeff Webb was a visionary leader whose passion and determination helped transform cheerleading into a global sport practiced by millions of athletes. Through his leadership, the ICU expanded to more than 120 countries and achieved historic recognition from the International Olympic Committee—a milestone that reflects his lifelong dedication to the development, safety, and international growth of the sport.

Since becoming a member of the IWGA in 2024, the ICU has quickly become an active and valued part of The World Games movement. Cheerleading was successfully included in the programme of the inaugural The World Games Series Hong Kong 2024 in Hong Kong and will also feature in The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China—an important step in bringing the sport to new international audiences.

IWGA President José Perurena said:

“Jeff Webb was a remarkable innovator and a true pioneer of his sport. His vision helped elevate cheerleading from a local activity into a worldwide movement that inspires young people across continents. The IWGA was proud to welcome the International Cheer Union into our family in 2024, and we have already seen the positive impact of Mr Webb’s work through cheerleading’s presence in The World Games Series and its inclusion in The World Games 2025 in Chengdu. On behalf of the entire IWGA community, we extend our sincere condolences to Jeff’s family, friends, and the global ICU family. His legacy will live on through the athletes and communities he inspired around the world.”

The IWGA stands in solidarity with the global cheerleading community during this difficult time and honours Jeff Webb’s enduring contribution to sport.
